Just a heads up. When you start practicing yoga, you may run into a few small difficulties. Don’t freak yourself out or even worse give up. Think about it. Every time you tried something new, it may not have come easy. But, you didn’t give up, you just kept trying. That is the same attitude you need to have now.
The first thing you might possibly notice will be some achy muscles. Think about it. You don’t just wake up one morning and run a marathon without working up to it. This is why it’s important to start slow and stretch. Although some poses require you to hold the pose, work up to it.
One of those poses that will really work you is the warrior pose. If your leg muscles are weak, even holding the pose for a minute may be too much. Just keep practicing and you’ll gain the strength to handle it like a pro. Don’t rush it, though. Keep practicing.
Another problem may be the price. Yoga can be expensive if you let it. Nowadays, yoga is big business due to its popularity. Commercial yoga classes can be expensive and private instructors can be even more costly. Not to fear! Many town centers and Y.M.C.A.’s can provide cheaper classes.
What kind of equipment will you need? Well, just because they make it and put the “yoga” name on it, doesn’t mean you have to buy it. The earliest yoga practiced in India thousands of years ago didn’t require money or fancy equipment. It was very simple and just as beneficial. You will need a yoga mat. You should be able to get one at a relatively inexpensive price. Next up you need a guide. The internet and library both have books and dvd’s on yoga, so you can try before you buy. When checking out the internet, don’t forget YouTube.
By researching yoga online, you can learn the finer points and correct methods. All the information is available if you do your research. By doing your research, you can save a lot of money. There will be no need to sign up for classes or get private instructors. This brings us to the next point.
Unqualified instructors. Yes, this is another problem many yoga students have without even realizing it. There are many yoga instructors with dodgy certification. Currently, there is no requirement for instructors to be certified by a reputable body or school. So, there are instructors with just a basic knowledge of yoga coaching people and this can be dangerous.
Not getting enough rest is another problem many people have. We live in a fast paced world where a hundred and one things demand our attention. The spouse, the kids, TV, your boss, your friends, your job… It just does not end. In many cases people sacrifice their sleep just to meet all these demands. If you’re starting out with yoga, you will have a new demand to meet.
One way to achieve this is to cut out or at least limit the unproductive activities. This could mean less time watching TV, less time going out with friends, etc. You, alone, must decide what is important to you. If yoga is going to be important, then you’ll need that extra time.
Please don’t stress out about it. The purpose of yoga is to relax your mind and your body. Be happy, be peaceful and be relaxed.
